Chapter Sixteen

I stay at the helm the rest of the night. If I were released from this self-imposed prison, I would break down Serenity’s door to make sure that Dylan could not harm her. I’ve seen far too much of what he can do, and he will not harm a hair on her head. Still, the look she’d given me had frozen me to my seat. I could do nothing but obey, and now I’m torturing myself with wonder at what could be going on down there.

If Dylan were to lose control, Serenity could be gone in less time than it takes me to get to her cabin.

“Chilly out,” Matthew says, appearing like a spirit from the shadows. I nod, my jaw ticking. He tosses a blanket at me, which I catch with one hand. Serenity’s aura is still stable, but that could change at a moment’s notice. Matthew sighs loudly and collapses on the bench beside me, stretching his arms over his head with an obnoxiously loud groan.

“How can I be calm when Serenity is willingly putting herself in danger?” I demand, my hands heating with tension and fury. I would do anything to keep Serenity safe, and it’s almost like she’s throwing it in my face. Still, I can’t say no to my Princess. She is my everything, and I am at her total mercy.

Matthew shakes his head, his hair falling across his unreadable features. His aura shows that of turmoil, though. He’s just as nervous as I. “You need to trust her a bit,” he says. This surprises me, because Matthew has shown no real signs of believing in Serenity. He has been spending a lot of time with her since we left Miami, though. Does he feel the same bond that Liam seems to feel? That I feel?

Instead of asking, I lean back on the seat. The wheel of the catamaran turns and twitches as the computer tells it what to do to stay on course, and the sails bulge with the gentle breeze moving us along.

“I think,” Matthew says slowly, “that you may not be the only one.”

I make a noncommittal noise. Is he still talking about Serenity involving herself with Dylan?

“I was in the palace, too,” Matthew continues. When I glance over at him, he’s leaning forward, elbows on his knees and chin resting on his folded hands. I wait for him to finish his thought, although I know exactly where it’s headed. “When the queen bound you together. We all were. What if…”

He stops then, moving his focus out to sea as the words catch in his throat. His aura changes from tense to just plain anxious, but I don’t speak up. I already know he’s right. Of course he is. We’ve all felt it, this inexplicable connection to the woman I found in the snowy streets of New York not long ago. She is bound to us. All of us.

“What if the queen bound us all together on purpose?” he finally asks.

And there it is.
